It was never published as a peer-reviewed paper.

🧠 The Core Idea: What Reading Asks of You
The 68% figure traces to a small 2009 experiment that received enormous press coverage without complete methods, full statistics, or replication. Without those, we should not treat it as a guaranteed biological response.
That does not mean reading cannot help you relax. When you sit quietly with a book, your breathing may slow, your muscles may begin to release, and your attention may shift away from whatever was keeping you activated. That is real. It is just not a precise percentage somebody can put on a graphic.
But the strongest case for reading was never about stress relief anyway.
It is about what sustained reading asks your brain to do.
When you read a narrative, you have to:
Hold characters, events, and context in working memory.
Connect what is happening now with something from several pages earlier.
Follow one continuous thread instead of jumping to a new stimulus every few seconds.
👉 That recruits attention, language, memory, and imagination at the same time, and trains the prefrontal cortex, which is the brain area we want to strengthen in the Digital Age.

⚡ What the Research Found
Two studies get cited constantly here. Both are more modest than the posts suggest, but still worth knowing.
The novel study. Researchers scanned participants on 19 consecutive days: five days of baseline, nine days reading a portion of a novel each evening, and five days after finishing. On the days after reading, connectivity increased in regions tied to story comprehension and perspective taking. Those changes decayed quickly. But changes in the somatosensory cortex, the bodily representation area, persisted for several days.
Interpret that carefully. It was small. It had no separate non-reading control group. It did not prove reading permanently rewired anything, and it did not show participants became smarter, more attentive, or more empathetic.
What it showed was narrower and still fascinating: a sustained narrative can temporarily alter patterns of communication within the brain.
The longevity study. Researchers followed more than 3,600 adults over 50 for roughly 12 years. Those reading books more than three and a half hours per week had a 23% lower risk of death during follow-up than non-readers. Any book reading at all was associated with about a 20% lower risk. The study found a dose-response pattern, and books outperformed newspapers and magazines.
That does not prove books extend your life. The study was observational. Readers may differ from non-readers in education, health, income, and cognitive activity. The researchers adjusted for many of these, but no model removes every difference.
The correct sentence is: regular book reading was associated with lower mortality in this population.
One detail the posts always skip, and the most interesting one to me: cognitive score statistically mediated the association. Which points to cognitive engagement as the pathway.
🧰 Practical Reset: Ten or Twenty Minutes
Here is the distinction that matters, and it is not paper versus screen.
You can read deeply on a tablet. You can skim a printed page and absorb nothing.
The important variable is the attentional state.
A rapidly changing feed repeatedly invites your attention to disengage and move on. A book asks you to resist that impulse, stay with one subject, and allow meaning to accumulate over time.
One practices switching. The other practices staying.
So start with ten or twenty minutes. Not because science identified that as a magical dose, but because it is long enough to settle into a narrative and short enough to make the habit realistic.
Put the phone outside your reach, not face-down beside you.
Choose something compelling enough to hold you, not something you think you should read.
Let one idea unfold without demanding something new every few seconds.

🔁 Bonus Upgrade: Where I Have to Be Careful
This issue opened by calling out somebody else's unverified number, so let me hold myself to the same standard.
The research does support a link between heavy media multitasking and poorer sustained attention. But the effects are modest, the literature is mixed, and it's all correlational. We do not know the direction of causality.
And no trial has tested whether reading books trains sustained attention as an intervention. Nobody has run that study.
So treat what I am saying as a reasoned position rather than a proven finding. Reading is not a medical treatment, and nobody needs to force themselves through a novel for an exact number of minutes.
What it is: a deliberate counterweight to an environment built around interruption, and this really does matter when it comes to, as I mentioned above, strengthening the functions of the prefrontal cortex.

Reading probably does help you relax, and it is associated with better long-term outcomes, but the strongest case is simpler: it is one of the few remaining activities that asks you to hold a single thread of attention over time. That is worth more than a fabricated percentage.
💭 One More Thing
It is worth asking why the 68% number spread so far.
It spread because it is specific, surprising, and fits in a headline. The actual findings are slower, hedged, and full of qualifiers. They don't travel as well, but matter more.
That is its own small argument for what this whole issue is about.
The content that wins your attention fastest is rarely the content that rewards it most.
